Agnikul Cosmos launches first rocket engine factory in India

Tags: Science and Technology

Space technology startup “Agnikul Cosmos” has launched India's first rocket engine factory in Chennai. This will be India's first such rocket engine factory in which 3-D printed rocket engines will be manufactured.

  • This factory has been named “Rocket Factory 1”. The factory was inaugurated in Chennai by Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and ISRO Chairman S Somnath in the presence of Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-SPACe) Chairman Pawan Goenka.

Important Facts:

  • This factory is built in IIT Madras Research Park in ten thousand square feet. It will have 400mm x 400mm x 400mm metal EOS 3D printers, with the help of which rocket engines can be built under one roof.

  • The capacity of this factory is such that it can make two rocket engines within a week. In this sense, a vehicle can be launched within a month.

  • Regarding this, the company had also shared a post on Twitter a few days ago, in which the company had talked about starting rocket making in its partnership with ISRO.

  • The company says it will use additive manufacturing technology to make 3D-printed rocket engines.

  • The startup's CEO Ravichandran told that they can make 8 rocket engines every month.

Other countries to be attracted for satellite launch:

  • With this, satellite launching companies no longer have the option of engines coming from Russia.

  • In such a situation, launching satellites through heavy rockets will be expensive and companies will use small launch vehicles for this. For this reason, companies can move towards India.

  • Around 30-35 people will work in the factory. 90% of these people are already employed in the factory.

Agnikul Cosmos:

  • Agnikul was created in 2017 by Ravichandran along with IIT Madras professors Moin SPM and SR Chakraborty.

  • The company does the work of making Agnibaan.

  • Agnibaan is a 2-stage launch vehicle that can carry a payload of up to 100 kg to an altitude of 700 km and place it in low Earth orbit.

  • Agnikul had signed an agreement with ISRO in December 2020. The agreement was signed under In-SPACK wherein ISRO's expertise and facilities can be used to manufacture rocket engines.
