Aircraft can be landed easily even in bad weather with the help of GAGAN technology

Tags: Science and Technology

On 28 April 2022, the Airport Authority of India (AAI), in collaboration with ISRO, successfully tested a new technology for landing aircraft. In this context, Indigo airline's aircraft landed the aircraft at the Kishangarh airport in Rajasthan through Gagan based LPV technology.

After this test, India is the fourth country after America, Europe and Japan, which has developed this technology.

Benefit from new technology:

  • The most challenging task is to make an aeroplane landing in bad weather at small airports located in remote areas. With the use of GAGAN based LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance) technology, this problem will be overcome and the landing of the aircraft will be safe.

Instrument Landing System (ILS) technology currently in use:

  • The technology used for landing aircraft in low visibility or inclement weather is ILS (Instrument Landing System) which is quite expensive. This is the reason that so far this system has been installed on only a little more than 50 runways at more than a hundred airports across the country. Due to the lack of this facility on every runway, not all airports allow aircraft landings in late nights or even in mild weather.

New Technological GAGAN :

  • GAGAN i.e. GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation has been developed by ISRO. This navigation system works through GSAT-8, GSAT-10 and GSAT-15 satellites launched by ISRO.

  • Based on Gagan, AAI has developed Gagan based LPV in collaboration with ISRO. Now with the help of this, it will be possible to land the aircraft on the basis of data received from satellites without ILS on the runway.
