Chhattisgarh Government launch a scheme to buy ‘gaumutra’ from Gauthans at Rs 4 per litre

Tags: Government Schemes State News

The chief minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel launched an initiative under the Godhan Nyay Yojana of the state government to buy gaumutra’ from Gauthan on the auspicious occasion of Hareli festival on 28 July 2022.

  • Hareli festival marks the beginning of Shravan month, is considered to be the first festival of the state and has a special significance for the farmers.
  • The chief minister launched the initiative by purchasing ‘gaumutra’ from Gauthan established in village Karsa of Patan block of Durg district.
  • The gaumutra is being purchased at Rs 4 per litre.

Godhan Nyay Yojana

  • Encouraged by the success of the Godhan Nyay Yojana launched two years ago on the auspicious occasion of Hareli, the government started the scheme to purchase gaumutra.
  • Under the Godhan Nyay Yojana, cow dung is being purchased at the rate of Rs 2 per kg from the cattle rearers.
  • The dung thus purchased is used to produce organic manure on a large scale which is being used by farmers in their fields, thereby promoting organic farming in the state.

Benefits of the Gaumutra

  • The cow urine purchased under this scheme will be used to make pest control products and ‘Jeevamrut’ (liquid organic fertilizer)
  • The move aims to minimize use of expensive chemical pesticides and promote organic farming in the state by making organic pesticides available to farmers at nominal prices.
  • It also aims to minimize residue of chemical pesticides in food items which destroys its nutritional value and causes harmful effects on human health.
  • Agricultural scientists suggest that cow urine insecticide is a superior and cheaper alternative to chemical pesticides. Its disease resistance is much higher than chemical pesticides. These pesticides are effective against leaf eating, fruit piercing and stem borer pests.

From where gaumutra will be sourced

  • Government of Chhattisgarh has established Gauthans in 8048 villages where cattles are kept and provided free of cost fodder, waters etc.
  •  These gauthans were started by the state government under the ‘Garwa’ program of Suraji Gaon Yojna.
  • In these Gauthans, cow dung is being procured for the last two years under the Godhan Nyay Yojana, using which women groups are preparing organic fertilizers and other products.
