In August 2022, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the setting up of India's first Night Safari Park in the Kukrail forest area of Lucknow.

  • In this ambitious project, a part of 2027.4 hectares of forest area in Kukrail will be converted into a Night Safari Park and a Zoological Park.
  • The proposal states that the Zoological Park will be set up in an area of 150 acres and the Night Safari Park in an area of 350 acres.

  • Currently, there are a total of 13 safaris in the country but they are all day safaris; Once completed, Lucknow's Kukrail will be India's first night safari.

Transfer of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park to Kukrail Forest :

  • As per the project proposal, the century-old Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park, popularly known as Lucknow Zoo, will also be shifted from its present location to Kukrail Forest. The new location of the Zoological Park will be about 12 km from its present location at Narhi. The decision to shift the Zoological Garden has been taken as part of the drive to decongest Narhi. Once relocated, the zoo will be converted into a modern open-air nocturnal zoo.

Promoting Eco-tourism in the State :

  • As per the decision of the Council of Ministers, the forest land currently not in use for any other project will be used for developing Zoological Park and Night Safari without affecting the existing flora and fauna. The objective of this project is to promote eco-tourism in the state.

Other features offered in Night Safari :

  • India's first Urban Night Safari project is being developed on the lines of Singapore.

  • Tourists will also be provided "train and jeep rides with local guides" as part of the Night Safari project.

  • As part of Lucknow's Night Safari project, the government plans to build a separate leopard safari on 75 acres of land, a bear safari in 60 acres and a tiger safari on 75 acres.

  • Unlike zoos, where animals are kept in cages, these safaris allow them to roam the jungle.

  • Apart from night safaris, the government is also planning to develop a modern theme park for tourists. It has recreational and adventure facilities such as canopy walks, camping activities, mountain bike tracks, wall climbing, tree-top restaurants, nature trails, and food courts.
