Tags: Science and Technology

India has been placed at the bottom on a list of 180 countries judged for their environmental performances by US-based institutions. It is for the first time that India has been placed at the bottom, 180th rank in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022.

Last year India was ranked at 177 out of 180 countries.

  • The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022 is published by the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University.
  • The Environmental Performance Index ranks 180 countries on 40 performance indicators across 11 categories on climate change performance, environmental health and ecosystem vitality.

Top Ranked countries

  1. Denmark, with a score of 77.90
  2. United Kingdom, with a score of 77.70
  3. Finland, with a score of 76.50
  4. Malta, with a score of 75.20
  5. Sweden, with a score of 72.70

The United States was ranked at 43, China at 161 and Russia at 112.

The Bottom ranked Countries

  • India (18.9 score) at 180 rank ,,
  • Myanmar(19.4 score)  at 179 rank ,
  • Vietnam (20.1 score ) at 178 rank ,
  •  Bangladesh (23.1 score) at 177 rank and
  • Pakistan (24.6 score) at 176 rank.

Why was India ranked at the bottom

The three primary categories under which scores have been given are ecosystem vitality, environmental health and climate change performance.

  • India has scored 19.3 on ecosystem vitality and the change in this area in the last decade is -2. India has seen loss in biodiversity and biodiverse habitats. It has lost tree cover, grasslands, and wetlands in large proportions.
  •  India has scored 12.5 on health; this means poor air quality, sanitation, and drinking water. India’s waste management in terms of solid wastes, ocean plastics, and recycling is also poor.
  • Under climate policy, India has scored 21.7.

EPI has said that India's low scores can be attributed to their prioritisation of economic growth over environmental sustainability.

According to the Environmental Performance Index projections, just four countries  China, India, the US and Russia  will account for over 50 per cent of residual global greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 if current trends hold.
