India’s first-ever end-to-end Digital Lok Adalat will be held on 13 August 2020 by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) and Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA).

It will facilitate common people to get justice from the comfort of their homes.

Jupitice, which claims to be the world’s first Justice Technology Company, is set to host the event.

What is digital Lok Adalat?

The proceedings of the Lok Adalat will be conducted online so as to make it accessible to the persons living in the remotest area of a state.

The filing of cases will be done online, notices, verdict can be accessed online and hearings will be held through video conferencing.

Rajasthan first state to launch the Digital Lok Adalat

  • Rajasthan was the first state where the Digital Lok Adalat was launched.
  •  This Digital Lok Adalat, powered by AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Blockchain, was launched by the National Legal Services Authority Chairman and Supreme Court judge, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit during the 18th All India Legal Services Authorities’ meet held in Jaipur in July.
  • Maharashtra became the second state to launch the Digital Lok Adalat.

Usefulness of the Digital Lok Adalat

  • Jupitice’s Digital Lok Adalat will be used by Maharashtra and Rajasthan to dispose of pending disputes/disputes at the pre-litigation stages quickly and efficiently.
  • The administrative work of the Lok Adalat would not only be more cost-effective but will also ensure efficiency, convenience, and transparency to all the stakeholders involved in the process.

Lok Adalat

  • Lok Adalat has been set up in India under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
  • It is organized by the National Legal Service Authority(NALSA)  with the concerned State Legal Service Authority.
  • It is an alternative dispute redressal mechanism in India.
  • It is a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably.
  • Under the said Act, the decision made by the Lok Adalats is deemed to be a decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal against such an award lies before any court of law.
  • If the parties are not satisfied with the award of the Lok Adalat then they are free to file a case in the court.
