Israel and Palestinian militants declare Gaza truce after Israel launches Operation Breaking Dawn

Tags: International News

Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group declared a truce late on7 August 2022, raising hopes of an end to the most serious conflict in the Gaza frontier in more than a year.

The truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group was mediated by Egypt.

Operation Breaking Dawn

Israel Defence Force (IDF) launched a pre- emptive strike code named ‘Operation Breaking Dawn’ on 5 August 2022 to target the top leadership of the militant Palestinian group, Islamic Jihad.

Reason for launching the operation by Israel

  • The Islamic Jihad Group had been threatening the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to avenge the arrest of a leader of the group, Bassam al-Saadi, in the occupied West Bank.
  • According to a senior Israeli military officer, Islamic Jihad had been preparing a major terror attack against Israeli civilians, with the Jihad Leader Tayseer Jabari and many of his fighters planning to attack civilians near the border.
  • During the air strike on Gaza on 5 August the IDF killed Tayseer Jabari, who had replaced al-Ata as the Jihad Group’s commander.
  • However the most powerful Islamic Palestinian group, Hamas has not participated in the latest round of conflict.

Retaliation and use of Iron Dome by Israel

  • In anticipation of the retaliatory attack by the Palestinian group Israel activated its famed air defence system “Iron Dome”.
  • Iron dome is considered to be one of the best air defence systems which launches guided missiles to hit incoming rockets and other short-range threats mid-air.
  • Islamic Jihad fired around 580 rockets on Israel before ceasefire on 7 August and the Iron Dome had intercepted 97% of the rockets.
  • Israel is currently ruled by a caretaker government headed by Yasir Lapid as the Prime Minister.

Israel -Palestinian Dispute

  • Israel is a Jewish country located in West Asia. Both the Arab Muslims known as Palestinians and the Jews claim the land called Palestine.
  • The Jews always raised a demand to have their own country especially after the persecution of the Jews in Europe in the early 20th Century. They wanted an unlimited right to migrate to the Jewish state and settle there.
  • In 1948 the United Nations passed a resolution for the creation of a Jewish state and a Muslim state of Palestine, by dividing Palestine into two.
  • It was opposed by the Arabs who lived there and other Arab countries, leading to a war in 1948. The Arabs were defeated and Israel captured the Arab territories.
  • In the 1967 war Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan and Gaza Strip from Egypt. Both these territories are home to large Palestinian populations.
  • Today, the West Bank is nominally controlled by the Palestinian Authority and is under Israeli occupation.
  • Gaza is controlled by Hamas, an Islamist fundamentalist party, and is under Israeli blockade but there is no occupying Israeli ground troop.

Two state solution

  • In 1993 the Israeli government and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) agreed on a plan to implement a two-state solution as part of the Oslo Accords.
  • Under this accord there will be a Jewish state of Israel and an Independent Palestinian State comprising of Gaza and West Bank.
  • However both sides are unable to agree on how to implement the agreement.
  • Israel in the meanwhile is trying to change the demographic profile of the west bank by evicting the Palestinians and settling the Jewish population in the area.
  • The Palestinian resistance is now being led by militant Islamic groups. The most powerful of them is the Iran supported Hamas group.
