Maharashtra Joins World Economic Forum GPAP to fight the menace of Plastic

Tags: State News

Maharashtra has joined the World Economic Forum (WEF) World Economic Forum’s, Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to advance regional efforts to fight plastic pollution.

This was announced at the WEF Annual Meeting 2022 being held at Davos, Switzerland from 22-26 May 2022.

  • The partnership will bring together Maharashtra's leading policy-makers, business leaders, civil society organizations and experts to formulate a state-level plan to eradicate plastic pollution.
  • The announcement follows the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly, where a resolution was adopted in March 2022 that will hold member nations legally accountable for their contributions to the global plastic pollution crisis.
  • Nations currently implementing such partnerships include Indonesia, Ghana, Pakistan, Vietnam and Nigeria.
  • The NPAP model creates a circular economy framework for plastics through a locally-led, locally-driven platform.
  • Maharashtra has the largest economy among states in India.

Circular economy

  • A circular economy entails markets that give incentives to reusing products, rather than scrapping them and then extracting new resources. It means that waste needs to be recycled, reused so that indiscriminate use of natural resources can be minimized.
  • In such an economy, all forms of waste, such as clothes, scrap metal and obsolete electronics, are returned to the economy or used more efficiently.
  • This can provide a way to not only protect the environment, but use natural resources more wisely, develop new sectors, create jobs and develop new capabilities.

World Economic Forum (WEF)

  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) is an international non-governmental and lobbying organization for Public-Private Cooperation.
  • It is based in Geneva, Switzerland
  • It was founded on 24 January 1971 by German economist Klaus Schwab as a not-for-profit foundation.
