The 30 countries, western military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) concluded its summit meeting in Madrid, Spain with a decision to confront Russia aggressively and to increase its troop along the Russian border.

The NATO summit meeting was held from 28 June to 30 June 2022 in Madrid, Spain.

Major Decision taken at the summit

NATO agreed to put over 300,000 troops at high readiness from 2023, up from 40,000 previously. Each member country will be assigned a particular area in countries which share borders with Russia.  The member country will work with the local forces to defend the country in case Russia attacks them.

It will strengthen the alliance's forward defenses, enhance the bloc's battlegroups on its eastern flank to counter Russia.  More troops and weapons will be deployed in the eastern front to face Russia.

China a new threat

For the first time NATO identified China as a systemic threat.

However Russia was mentioned as the most significant and direct threat to NATO.

Keeping the Chinese threat in mind it invited leaders of Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand to attend its summit for the first time.

Invite to new Member

It invited Finland and Sweden to join NATO.

Sweden and Finland, which has a 1,300km border with Russia, dropped their traditional stance of neutrality and applied to join NATO after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Initially their membership was opposed by Turkiye as it accused these countries of sheltering and supporting the Kurdish group PKK. PKK wants to create an independent country for the Kurds of Turkiye.

PKK is designated as a terrorist group by Turkiye.

Later Turkiye agreed to support the membership of Finland and Sweden after an agreement with these two countries.

NATO Innovation Fund

NATO agreed to set up an NATO Innovation Fund. It will be a multi-sovereign venture capital fund that will invest 1 billion euros ($1.05 billion) in start-ups and other venture capital funds developing emerging technologies for both civilian and military use.

Increase in Defence spending

The member countries agreed to spend at least 2 percent of GDP on defence by 2024.
