Tags: National News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the national emblem on the roof of the new Parliament House on 11 July 2022. With this, the construction work of the new Parliament building is likely to be completed by the end of 2022.

  • In this context, it is believed that the winter session of Parliament will be held in the new building.

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh were also present during the inauguration of the national emblem.

  • The Prime Minister also participated in a religious program at the construction site.

  • During this, the Prime Minister also interacted with the workers engaged in the construction of Parliament House and told them that they should be proud of their work.

  • According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the bronze emblem weighs 9,500 kg and measures 6.5 meters in height.

  • The national emblem has been installed at the top of the new Parliament building and a steel structure weighing about 6,500 kg has been built around it to support it.

  • According to the PMO, the process of installing the national emblem on the roof of the new Parliament House has gone through eight different stages ranging from clay modeling and computer graphics to bronze casting and polishing.

  • Meanwhile, several opposition parties criticized the Prime Minister for unveiling the national emblem. They believe that the Constitution separates the powers of the Parliament, the Government and the Judiciary. As the head of government, the prime minister should not have unveiled the national emblem in the new Parliament building.

  • In this context, it should have been such that during this time there should be impartial functionaries like the President, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, etc. at the top of the judiciary, and not the Prime Minister.

National Emblem of India (Ashoka Pillar):

  • The Ashoka Pillar, the national emblem of India, is derived from the pillar built by Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Empire at Sarnath.

  • It was adopted on 26 January 1950 when India became a Republic. “Satyameva Jayate” is written in Devanagari script on the Ashoka pillar, which is taken from the Mundak Upanishad.

  • Four lions stand on the top of this pillar, the back of which is attached to the pillars.

  • It also has the Dharma Chakra (Wheel of Law) in front of the structure.

  • The symbol of India represents strength, courage, pride, and faith. Around the wheel are a horse and a bull.

  • Its use is controlled and restricted under the State Emblem of India Section, 2005.
