India’s recorded an all-time high power demand of 201.066 Giga Watt (GW) or 201,066 MW on 26 April 2022 according to the data released by the Union Ministry of Power. The earlier record was of 200.539 GW (200,539 MW) power demand recorded on 7 July 2021.
The demand for power has increased in India reflecting strong economic activities in the country and also unusually hot April month this year.
It is expected to reach about 215-220 GW (215,000- 220,000MW) in the months of May-June.
The power supply situation in India is critical as many power plants in India are facing coal shortage.
According to the Central Electricity Authority as many as 86 of 150 power plants running on domestic coal had critically low levels of coal (on 25 April 2022).
Of the 15 power plants designed on imported coal, 12 were marked as “critical”. Another eight plants were not in operation due to the crisis.
The main reason was low supply from Coal India Limited and lack of rakes by the Indian Railways to transport them.
Problem in Importing coal
India is the second largest importer of coal in the world after China.
Australia, Indonesia and South Africa are the major suppliers of coal to India.
Australia is the main supplier of coking coal which is used in the production of steel.
Indonesia and South Africa are the main suppliers of thermal coal which is used in the production of power.
Russia is the third largest exporter of coal in the world after Indonesia and Australia . But due to its war with Ukraine the flow of Russian coal in the international market has almost stopped leading to high prices in the International market.
