Prime Minister Modi inaugurates world’s first Nano urea (liquid) plant in Gujarat

Tags: Economy/Finance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world’s first nano urea (liquid) at Kalol in Gujarat on 28 May 2022. The urea plant has been set up by Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) in Kalol, Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

IIFCO became the first company in the world to introduce ‘Nano Urea’ in liquid form for farmers across the world in 2021.

It was developed by the scientists of IFFCO at Nano Biotechnology Research Centre, Kalol, and Gujarat.

It is developed to replace conventional Urea and it can curtail the requirement of the same by at least 50%.It contains 40,000 ppm of Nitrogen in a 500 ml bottle which is equivalent to the impact of nitrogen nutrient provided by one bag of conventional Urea.

Problems with Conventional Urea

  • Excess use of urea leads to environmental pollution, harms soil health, and leads to production loss.
  • The conventional urea is in granular form and the plants absorb about 30 to 50% of the urea and rest goes waste leading to soil pollution, water pollution and release of nitrous oxide gas which is a greenhouse gas.
  •  The use of liquid nano urea by farmers will boost balanced nutrition programs by reducing the excess use of Urea application in the soil and will make the crops stronger, healthier and protect them from lodging effect.

Why it is better than conventional urea

  • The nano urea uses nano technology to design ultra-small particles.
  • The size of one nano urea liquid particle is 30 nanometre.
  • Due to the ultra-small size and surface properties, the nano urea liquid gets absorbed by plants more effectively when sprayed on their leaves.
  • Plants absorb about 80% of the liquid nano urea leading to improvement in crop yield, soil health and nutritional quality of crops.

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO)

  • It is the world’s largest farmer cooperative in the world.
  • It is a multi-state cooperative which was setup in 1967 to produce fertilizers.
  • It is the largest manufacturer of fertilizers in India.
  • Headquarters : New Delhi
  • It has manufacturing facilities in Kalol and Kandla in Gujarat, Phulpur and Anola in Uttar Pradesh and Paradip in Odisha.
