Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared open the FIDE 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, Tamilnadu on 28 July 2022. The chess Olympiad will be held from 29 July to 10 August. The venue of the Chess Olympiad is Mamallapuram, which is near Chennai.

  • Originally the Russian capital Moscow was to host the event but it was moved from Russia by FIDE as a reaction to its invasion of Ukraine.
  • It is the first time that India is organising the Chess Olympiad
  • The last, 43rd Chess Olympiad was held in Batumi, Georgia in 2018.
  • Tamilnadu is considered to be the powerhouse of Indian Chess. 26 out of 74 Chess grandmasters of India belongs to Chennai including the former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand.

Features of the 44th Chess Olympiad

  • Originally 188 countries confirmed their participation in the open section of the Olympiad but the Pakistani team which had reached Mamallapuram, boycotted the Olympiad in protest against the Olympiad torch relay passing through Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan claims that Jammu and Kashmir is its territory and India has occupied it.
  • A total of 187 teams in the open section will play for the men’s Hamilton-Russell Cup, and 162 teams in the women's section for the Vera Menchik Cup, while the best combined results of a nation in both the sections will decide the winner of the Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy.
  • The mascot of the Olympiad is Thambi. Thambi’ in Tamil means younger brother. Thambi is a Knight dressed in a traditional Tamil attire, Veshti (Dhoti) with a shirt and folded hands. The word “Chess believes” is written on the shirt.
  • It was the first time that the torch relay was introduced in the Chess Olympiad. The torch relay started from New Delhi and travelled to 75 iconic locations in the country for over 40 days, traversing close to 20,000 kilometres and culminating in Mahabalipuram, before heading to the FIDE Headquarters, Switzerland.
  • The defending champion China is not participating in the event along with Russia, Belarus and Pakistan.
  • No reason has been given by China but Russia was expelled by FIDE for its invasion of Ukraine and Belarus was expelled due to its support of Russian action.
